With pretty roombas all in a row

After much planning and discussing and even some diagramming, our vegetable garden is in! So far we have peas, lettuce, carrots, radishes and spinach planted. Still to come are tomatoes, peppers, potatoes and cucumbers. These will all be surrounded by herbs and garden fairies.

Shane built and installed the raised beds, mostly in the pouring rain. He then filled them with lovely soil and compost. Cooper loves anything that contains poo of any variety, so it’s been a challenge to keep her out of the beds. We’re working on it.

I found myself taking photos of every stage of the garden construction. In my mind, I imagined Lina, a few years from now. She’d turn to me and say, “Mama, how did the garden get here?” and I’d have a powerpoint presentation at the ready.

I’m looking forward to watching her pull carrots out of the ground to eat. While this may be a lot to expect from a kid who doesn’t like to have one speck of dirt on her hands, I’m optimistic. I still remember the sugar-sweetness of carrots from my mother’s garden. I remember rinsing them off with water from the garden hose, and munching them on the spot. I remember apples, plums, and the best peaches I’ve ever had in my entire life.

It’s almost spring, folks. The trees are starting to bloom, and now when the rain falls here in Seattle, I can practically see my garden growing.
