snow day

The city of Seattle is iced over today. Campus is closed for the day, so Lina and I are kickin’ it at the ranch. Enjoying the crackling of a Java-Log fire.

During times of inclement weather (which includes snow, rain, or simply damp and cold environs), Lily does everything she can to avoid going outdoors. She hates the cold. She’ll hold on to her “business” for hours on end. Closed for business. All transactions are put on hold. The doors are frozen shut. No business, no way.

When we finally coerce her into going outside (which usually involves my going outside as well), she fusses around for a few minutes. If she’d just spare us the drama, the whole thing could be over much more quickly. But no… she needs to express her disdain of the winter wonderland. Finally, she’ll settle down and pee. This takes forever, and I stand there freezing. Sheesh.

Lina and Lily are becoming better friends. It’s pretty cute. During moments when Lina is angry and prone to throwing objects, tantrum-style, I keep a close eye on her to make sure she won’t take her anger out on Lily. When Lily approaches Lina in an angry moment, so far, Lina breaks out into a big smile and seems to be soothed by Lily’s presence. Lily makes her giggle. Lily makes pretty much everyone giggle. Pugs are comfort for the soul.

Which reminds me… Cooper! Yes. We’re now picking her up on the 9th instead of the 16th. I just couldn’t wait another week for Her Coopness to join our family. Lily was such a breeze to train, and I’m a little nervous about going through all the phases of training a dog again. I’m reviewing the literature and reminding myself that the discipline we used with Lily has paid off to make her into a very civilized creature (see above). If we do as well with Cooper I’ll be thrilled.

If Lily is the Atomic Pug, then what is Cooper? I suppose she’s the Sub-Atomic Pug. Hierarchy is very important in the dog universe, and Lily will be alpha to Coops. (Finally! Lily gets to be alpha to someone!) So… Sub-Atomic Pug it is. SAP. My little fuzzy particle, bouncing off the walls of the ranch. I can’t wait!

I can’t wait to meet Cooper, but you must remember: Lily is alpha to a fully-grown pitbull mix who lives in Oakland. Remind Lily to tell Coop that bit when Coop tries to sleep in Lily’s bed.

Nuh-uh Coop, no you di’ ‘int.
