Giving Thanks

I have my usual feeling of relief today. I think Thanksgiving is a fine holiday, but I like the day after so much better. The leftovers. The low stress. The lack of schedule. The quiet.

Our house still smells like food. More specifically, it smells like food that has been through the garbage disposal. This is because whatever drain that usually functions to scurry our kitchen sink remains off to Puget Sound failed to do so yesterday. Our basement was partially flooded as a result. We cannot use the kitchen sink. I’ll let you imagine the dirty dishes that languish in our kitchen. I’ll let you imagine the garlic-marinated carpet downstairs. It’s a huge mess.

We tried to get a plumber out yesterday, but seeing as most plumbers were just about to sit down to their own Thanksgiving feasts, we weren’t successful. I’m sure we could have “talked” someone into it (read:$$) but figured we’d just deal until today. Which we’ve been doing. The plumber is now on his way, and the carpet restoration folks will be here soon as well.

As annoying and smelly as this all is, I guess it’s a pretty small thing. All repairable. All replaceable. We still had a lovely Thanksgiving in our warm and cozy home. We had a wonderful evening with some dear friends. I did two hours of yoga yesterday. Lina is the brightest, most beautiful child on the planet.

We’re blessed. A million times over. It’s remembering it that’s the trick.
