I CAN celebrate my birthday
I am 35 today! Happy birthday to me!
Now, go to the American Girl website and buy one of their “I Can” bracelets for all the girls you know. American Girl is trying to help send a positive, empowering message to girls, and they’re taking shit for that. Amazing. I read about it in the newspaper this morning, and was prompted to immediately order twenty bracelets. Apparently the bracelets have already been pulled from Bath & Body Works stores (who also carry American Girl merch) because of the pressure. Some of the money goes to Girls Inc, an organization that helps girls to meet their potential in a world that often doesn’t hold the bar terribly high for them. I think these folks ROCK because of their empasis on science (yay!) athletics (sweet!) and self-esteem (nice!). They also teach girls about their reproductive rights (thank you, Girls Inc) which upsets some people. I think those people should go away and learn about their own bodies before bossing other people’s bodies around. Especially girls, who happen to be the ones who get pregnant. So there.
This is from the Girls Inc website: Girls Inc. has empowered girls for over 141 years, first as Girls Clubs of America and since 1990 as Girls Incorporated. In centers across the country, generations of girls have learned their strengths, explored their worlds, prepared for productive, interesting lives, and offered each other the support necessary in dealing with the challenges of growing up.
Anyhoo. . . check out the bracelets:
