About her name
What does it mean? Well, first off, her Chinese name is Tong Min Juan. Tong is from the name of the city where she lives now (Tonggu) and means “copper,” Min means “of the people” and is a middle name she shares with all her “siblings” at the Tonggu Welfare Institute (orphanage), and Juan means either “Donate” or “Graceful” (we’re not entirely sure yet which, but we’ll find out). We decided that “Juan” would be too likely to be confused with the latino name “Juan”, but wanted to keep part of her Chinese name, so we kept her middle name. Her (new) first name has multiple meanings. “Li Na” is a Chinese name that means “beautiful” (Li) and “graceful” (Na). According to a colleague of mine, most Chinese names work as unisex names, but this is one that definitely doesn’t–”Na” implies very feminine grace. Li Na is a fairly common name for girls but is almost never used for boys. We decided to put these names together into “Lina”, which has a host of meanings depending on origin:
- Arabic: delicate or tender
- Dutch: pure
- Greek: light
- Latin: light
- Ballard: cute li’l punkin

In Sweden Lina means “The Powerful one”
